Part of the Family

Some spirits simply make themselves a part of the family. A story I received from a beautiful little family near Red Deer, Alberta. They moved into a house on an old acreage. A very old farmhouse was relocated only meters away from where it was first erected, but moved onto a basement and renovated into a wonderful family home. The young couple, recently married, prepared themselves for a wonderful life together in their new domain, planning future Christmas’s, birthdays and of course, children.
The wife, whom we’ll call Chantel, and the husband, Dave, enjoyed their new home, decorating and entertaining. The odd happenings of the home started very soon after they moved in. Dave was in the basement one day and happened to hear the water taps being turned on in the nearby bathroom. Thinking he wasn’t alone, he curiously approached the bathroom to see who was using the taps, considering only he and his wife were in the house.
Upon nearing the doorway, he saw no one in the washroom. Puzzled, he approached the sink to turn off the taps, struggling a little due to the fact that the taps were very old and not very easy to turn.
He went upstairs and confronted his wife, thinking that she’d absent-mindedly left the taps on. She proclaimed vehemently that she hadn’t even been downstairs yet and had never even used that sink yet.
Shaking his head, he put the odd occurrence into the background of his thoughts and continued his work around the house.
Sometime after they moved in, the spirit decided to make itself very known. Dave would come home from work, deposit any loose change from his jeans pockets onto the bedroom dresser. Upon waking the next morning, Chantel and Dave would find that the change had been very carefully and diligently stacked one on top of each other. Clearly freaked out a little from the strange incident, both swore up and down to one another that neither had done this.
Little things continued to plague the couple. Chantel continuously saw shadows or odd figments out of the corner of her eyes. Just sitting on the couch, she would constantly glimpse someone or something near the stairs to the right of her. Annoyed and unnerved, she would sometimes say aloud for it to go away.
Dave, however, was about to become much, much closer to this new friend of the house.
The couple had gone to bed and a while after sleeping, Dave was awakened by a sense of a presence. He looked over to the side of the bed and there, clear as day, was a little girl, approximately six or seven years old, dressed in an old fashioned white nightgown and long dark hair. She didn’t make him feel the least afraid, she just seemed simply curious.
Feeling at ease with her presence, Dave turned over and proceeded into his slumber. He told Chantel of the experience the next day, and of course, she was much less at ease with the whole situation.
Time flew by and in no time Chantel was pregnant. The little girl had never actually made her presence quite so apparent to Chantel as she had with Dave, but she continued to visit him at night from time to time, seemingly enjoying his presence in the home. She seemed to consider him a father figure.
One night, after the couple’s beautiful baby girl was born, Chantel was up in the middle of the night to tend to the baby. She walked out of the bedroom and into the kitchen, lit only by the outside yard light. She stopped in her tracks when she noticed an unfamiliar and odd shadow just around the corner of the kitchen cabinet. Peering into the semi-darkness, she waited for her eyes to adjust, assuming this figure of darkness was simply the cat or her eyes playing tricks on her.
As she neared the object and peered, squinting her eyes, the shadow, which was now very near and clear to her, moved. She states that it definitely was too big to be the cat and the way it moved was unlike anything else she’d ever seen. It seemed to float and glide through the air with snake-like motions. Screaming, she ran back to the bedroom where Dave tried to calm her down, and after a quick sweep of the kitchen, he proclaimed that whatever it was, was now gone.
Over the years, the spirit has calmed down and settled into the pattern of the family. The family cat can be seen and heard meowing at a seemingly empty corner, or rubbing itself against unseen legs.
Not too many incidences ever really happen anymore. Since their little girl has aged, she seems to have developed an interesting friendship with the ghost girl. They play hide and seek sometimes or they play quietly together in the daughter’s room.
The couple welcomed a new baby recently, a little boy, it will be interesting to see if he also befriends the little ghost girl in the future.
Once in a while, she’ll wake Dave up for a little visit, just to let him know that she still exists. She sometimes shows her disapproval in certain circumstances, such as when Dave and Chantel go out for the evening and leave the children with a babysitter. The ghost girl will turn the taps on downstairs and do little things to disturb the babysitter. A tiny tantrum perhaps.
There is no record of a child dying on the premises, but I myself have visited the house to see what I could pick up from the spirit. The first day there however, I definitely sensed her, but she was very shy and elusive, I could feel her moving away anytime I came too near to her.
In any case, this shy, quiet little spirit has decidedly chosen her own family, since hers are probably long gone.

  1. What a wonderful story! It makes sense to encourage human beings to evolve to feel more at ease with spirit. After all, spirit is everywhere, even if many people choose not to sense it or acknowledge it. Each human being has a spiritual side that is bursting to get out. As a person finds the courage to unlease this powerful inner energy, perspective and experiences stretch and transform in unforeseen directions.
